FIRE · WATER · EARTH · AIR · PRESENCE

Come ready to not know.

“Come ready to be changed by the land, not merely informed by it.”

The practice works with five teachers. We spend time with water and weather. We build a fire from the dead wood of the forest and sit beside it in the dark. We meet the soil and spend time alone among the ferns and by the river. We gather with tea.

Sometimes people are invited to place bare feet in woodland soil. Participation is always a choice. There is no pressure to explain an experience or to share it before you are ready.

The work asks for patience, participation and a willingness to look again.

BEGIN WITH ONE PLACE

The sitting spot.

Return to the same place. Sit down. Say nothing. Do this again tomorrow.

Choose somewhere outdoors where something is alive. Sit quietly for twenty minutes, if that is comfortable for you. Notice the nearest living thing carrying on with its own day. Return before deciding what the place means.

This is something you can begin where you live, before you ever come to Hensol.

AFTERWORD

Naturally Smart.
Naturally Ours.

This booklet began with a simple intention: to describe what is being built in a wood in Galloway, rooted in the Biosphere Reserve, grown from years of practice. A living demonstration that place-based learning, ecological intelligence, and human flourishing are not separate ambitions. They are one.

What you have read is not a finished story. It is a foundation laid carefully, tested by the land and the seasons, and now ready to carry weight.

The next chapter belongs to the people, places, and partnerships who recognise what is being built here and choose to be part of it.

MORE THAN TEN YEARS OF GATHERINGS

The practice travels.

France, England, Canada, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and at home in Scotland. The land is different each time, and so the gathering is too.
